Kelve 1 day picnic – A fantastic must do

Just about 35 kms north of Virar near Mumbai is Kelve which is a beach that is a great place for a day picnic. The town is around 75 kms from Mumbai. For those seeking a solace and serene spot, this is it. 

The beach is easy to reach as it is a mere 5 kms away from Kelve road railway station which is on the Western railway. The place is easily accessible for people from Mumbai and Gujarat with trains easily available via the Dahanu-Virar-Churchgate route.

Drive

It is a great drive also for those who want to come by their own vehicle with the Mumbai-Gujarat highway being the way to get to this beach town. There is also an Ambaji mata temple and Shitaladevi temple which draws many devotees to Kelve. People combine a beach and devotional trip together. 

Kelve beach

The Shitaladevi temple has the deity carved out of an unbroken rock and is surrounded by agricultural land. Fresh fruits and vegetables are available. Many come from Maharashtra, Gujarat and even Rajasthan to make and complete vows to Shitaladevi. 

Beach

Kelve beach is around 8 kms long and is a great place for those looking for fun in the sun with sand and surf. The beach is lined by casuarina trees which are locally known as suru trees. 

There is also the Kelve fort which is in ruins. The fort’s outer walls, steps, parapet and four bastions are what remain and can be viewed. It is rectangular in shape with two gates. The fort was built by the Portuguese in 1700. It was part of Maratha history and captured by the British in the 1800s. It was found in 2008-09 half buried in the sand near Mangelwada in Kelve.

The beach has wonderful sunsets that can be viewed as well as there are many stalls that serve gola, chaat, snacks, ice cream, coconut water, etc. There are also animal rides, a few adventure activities that can be done on the weekends.

The ideal time if you want a non-crowded experience is the weekdays but weekends are also good as you get more activities to do. The beach is one of the longest continuous ones in Palghar so you can easily find a spot for yourself on the beach that is away from the crowd. 

The beach has great places nearby which are perfect to stay and make a base for your trip to the town. There is a lot of parking available and the property is comfortable and economical. The food available is delicious and a must-try. June to February is an ideal time to picnic at this spot. 

Dam

There is also a dam that is used to store water in Zanzorli and is a good place to experience greenery. During the monsoon this is a good place to visit. The Kelve danda bridge is also a nice place for pictures as it connects Kelve to Saphale. These can also be visited during your day picnic to Kelve.
