6 traits every rookie backpacker must possess

Everyone is different including travellers. Different travellers have different qualities and different characteristics. No two travellers have the exact same travel experience. Even with all these differences backpackers and travellers share some common traits with each other which make their travel life better and more enjoyable.

Here the six traits every wannabe traveller has –

1. The need to know everything

Be it just the route, mode of transport, cost or even the endless questions you love talking to the locals and getting as much information as you can. Curiosity is the basic requirement to learn anything in a travel experience like the place, people and their way of life or even the food and their recipes. The urge to learn more and more about new places and different cultures keeps travellers motivated and energetic. Curiosity makes travel an obsession.

2. Patience is a virtue

Every good traveller or backpacker is patient and understanding. This is in the wake of a long wait for bus tickets or the bus journey itself. Not all travel experiences are smooth; sometimes things may not go as planned. At such times, the patience of a backpacker is truly tested.Especially in countries like India where transport facilities like trains and buses are always delayed or sometimes even cancelled. Hence, patience is an important personal trait that every good traveller should possess.

3. Backpackers Ability to adapt

Before stepping out, planning each and every aspect of your journey, making a list of things to do and stuff to see is a good idea to adopt. While backpacking is not everything, go according to plan and you will always have to cope with some situations you would never have come across at home. Weather it is socialising with people you don’t like or giving street food a try; a good traveller is one who can enjoy these situations and make the most out of them. Adaptability is the most important trait for any traveller or backpacker to have. Without this he or she won’t be able to make it.

4. Backpackers Sense of humour

The ability to make others laugh is a gift from God. Travel life becomes so much easier with a good sense of humour. Not only does it make the journey more enjoyable but also helps relieve stress caused by long waits or irritating passengers. While travelling to new places, it is easy to make mistakes. We all have our embarrassing moments. At such times, having a good sense of humour makes it easier to deal it.

5. Young at heart

By this I mean that the traveller is willing to learn new things, try out different food and blend in with the locals. He or she is not stuck with the past and looks for new ways of doing things. A good traveller can be 18 or 81 as long as he or she is young at heart and is determined and willing to learn, age is not a factor.

6. Flexibility

While backpacking, sticking tightly to your plan means you will have to miss out on some amazing opportunities. While you are on the road thing will not always work out as planned but a wannabe traveller is always able to make changes if necessary. These changes can be anything like deciding to spend an extra night or taking a different route. While backpacking is a once in a lifetime opportunity, it would be a shame to miss out on a chance just because it did not fit into your schedule.
