Dal Lake in Kashmir is a place in India which cannot be defined in words or chronicled in videos. One can only experience Kashmir while being in Kashmir. There are many places to visit in Kashmir like Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam and Srinagar. But the capital of Kashmir Srinagar has its own beauty from Dal Lake to Mughal gardens to Nigeen Lake. 

The most famous spot of Srinagar or Kashmir is Dal Lake which is also known as “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir”. It’s one of the beautiful lakes in India. There are many things we can do at Dal Lake:

1. Shikara Ride in Dal Lake

A shikara ride is a must-do thing in Dal Lake if you are in Srinagar. There are many shikara rides available. It depends on how a long ride you want to take. The ride starts from 30 minutes to a two hours ride which takes you around the whole lake. But keep in mind that you should bargain because they charge a lot, so make sure you bargain before your ride starts.

2. Houseboat Stay

If you are planning to stay near the lake, then you should try a houseboat. They are in the lake and stationed at one place not like the Kerala backwaters houseboats. This is the best experience in itself. There are many types of houseboats available from budget to luxury.

3. Floating Market

Dal Lake is not a normal lake like other lakes, it is a whole civilization in itself. You will find everything inside the lake from grocery to fancy clothes, ice cream to fruits. Everything is available as there are many shops which sell Pashmina shawls and saffron. If you want to see something different, then there is a flower market which only happens in the morning between 4 am to 5 am.

4. Sunset at the lake

Seeing the sunset at Dal Lake is one of the best things to do. Take a shikara ride in the evening and just anchor your shikara. Dal is the best place in Srinagar to watch the sunset.

5. Mughal Gardens

There are several gardens near Dal Lake and Mughal Gardens are one of the most famous gardens. They consist of Nishat Baug, Shalimar Baug. These gardens were constructed by the Mughals in the Mughal Era. These gardens have many small water streams and different types of flowers.

6. Fishing

You will find many locals fishing in the lake. There are many different types of fish in the lake. If you are staying in the houseboat, you can ask the owner if you want to try your hands at fishing. There are many locals who fish and sell their catch in the market.

7. Walk around

The shore of Dal Lake is almost 15 kilometres and it is the best way to explore the lake. You will find many locals or vendors selling tea, corn, pani puri etc. You can just sit and watch shikaras roaming around. In the evening you will find most of the crowd wandering on the shore

8. Hazratbal

Hazratbal is a shrine near Dal Lake and is considered to be Kashmir’s holiest Muslim shrine. It is the most beautiful architecture in Kashmir. Made of white marble, it has a big courtyard on one side and the other side of it is Dal Lake.

9. Char Chinar

It’s an island in the middle of the lake which is famous for four Chinar trees constructed by the Mughals. These trees look so beautiful as it is between the lake and the reflection of this island on the lake water makes it more beautiful.
