Backpackers road trip around Nagaland & Meghalaya in 8 day

Here is The Land Of Wanderlust’s blueprint to an eight-day backpacker’s road trip around the lesser explored states of Meghalaya and Nagaland in the North-Eastern part of India. Meghalaya is well known for having a couple of the wettest villages in the world and also the living root bridge. Nagaland is the epicentre of culture and heritage with head hunter tribes and tribals still rooted in their tribal way of life.

Flight tickets can be booked at an additional cost as per current airline rates. Inclusion:

Essentials to carry

Terms & Conditions

Day 1:

  • Meet at Paltan Bazaar in Guwahati, Assam at 1:30 pm.

  • Take a shared jeep from Paltan Bazaar to Shillong in Meghlaya at 3:30 pm.

  • Reach Shillong by 7:30 pm and check into a guest house.

  • Spend the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 2:

Day 3:

  • Post breakfast leave for local sightseeing. Visit Wards Lake, Butterfly Museum.

  • Visit Bara Bazaar the local Kashi Market.

  • Hop into a shared jeep from Police Bazaar at 3:30 pm for Guwahati.

  • Reach Paltan Bazaar in Guwahati around 9 pm.

  • Board a train from Guwahati to Dimapur in Nagaland around 10:50 pm.

Day 4:

  • Arrive at Dimapur railway station by 6 am and take a taxi to Kohima, the capital of Nagaland.

  • Reach Kohima by 10 am and check into a guest house.

  • Spend the rest of the day strolling through the lanes of Kohima and visit the local Naga Market.

Day 5:

  • Leave by 5 am for a road trip around Phek district.

  • First stop around 10 am at the legendary Naga village of Khezakeno.

  • Post lunch, leave for the Chakashang tribal village of Thestiimi on the border of Manipur and Nagaland.

  • Spend the night with a tribal family. Home stay in Thestiimi.

Day 6:

  • Post breakfast, leave for the town of Pfutsero which is the highest inhabited place in Nagaland.

  • Visit Glory Peak and spend time wandering through the streets.

  • Post lunch, return back to the guest house in Kohima.

  • Rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 7:

  • Leave by jeep at 9 am for the green village of Khonoma 20 kms from Kohima.

  • Spend time in the Angami tribal village which is well know for its paddy fields and is also rich in Naga history.

  • Return back to the guest house at around 4 pm.

  • Pack up and leave for Dimapur by taxi at 7 pm.

  • Reach Dimapur railway station and board a train to Guwahati by 10:30 pm.

Day 8:

  • Reach Guwahati railway station by 5 am.
