Davis Falls is also known as Patale Chango, which means “underground waterfall” in Nepali. This is because the water that feeds the waterfall comes from the Phewa Lake, which follows a rocky stream and then plunges into a deep gorge, creating a 500 feet long underground tunnel.

The name Davis Falls was given after a tragic incident that occurred on 31 July 1961. A Swiss couple named Davi and Devis went swimming in the Phewa Lake, but Devis was swept away by the strong current and drowned in the pit of the waterfall. Her body was recovered three days later in the river Phusre.

The father of Devis wished to name the waterfall “David’s Falls” after his daughter, but due to a pronunciation error, it became “Devi’s Falls”. Some locals also believe that the name is derived from a Hindu goddess named Devi, who is worshipped near the waterfall.
