What to experience in Kasol

The small backpacker town in Himachal Pradesh has been our home for the last seven years. After living here for so long, this is a list of things we feel everyone who comes to Kasol should at least consider experiencing.

Experience the local bus ride

It’s only in the local buses, that you will understand the actual vibe of the valley. Take the bus from Kasol to Manikaran or Barsheni and you’ll know.

Experience the morning cold

Barring the month of June and July, Kasol is the place where you feel like waking up late and lazing around in bed. The morning weather is just perfect for those who love sleeping.

Experience the snow-capped mountains

No matter where you look, you’ll always see snow-capped mountains around Kasol. It’s surreal to be walking around with a view like that.

Experience the flowing river

With the Parvati River and the Grahan Nala in close proximity, it’s the best place to spend some quiet time meditating with the sound of nature.

Experience the Himalayan hiking

Kasol is the base for numerous hikes around the valley to tiny villages and base camps. It’s the ideal place to start your first hike.

Mountains and momos both go hand in hand. Of all the places in the Himalayas, Shamu Momo stall serves arguably the best you can find anywhere in the region. It’s a must-have.

Experience a homestay

Over the years, Kasol has changed from a small backpacker hamlet to a bustling weekend destination. If you still want an authentic experience, a night in a homestay with a Himachali family is the way to go.

Experience the warmth of locals

Everyone here is very friendly from the kids to older people. There is hardly a person who will talk rudely or try to cheat you in this town.

Experience the Hippie market

Experience the German bakery

For those who crave a sugar rush, don’t worry, the German bakery around the place will satisfy your craving. From Nutella croissants and carrot cakes to apple crumble pies, these are worth more than just one try.

Experience walking through dense forest

It’s not every day that you get a chance to walk aimlessly with full network through a dense pine tree forest. This is exactly what the woods in Kasol are like.  Make sure to take a stroll.

Experience a candlelight dinner at Evergreen

Experience a bowl of rice beer

Chang as it is locally called, is basically rice that is fermented through the day which gives a slight alcoholic feel to the brew. It’s nothing like the name and is not something you’ll want to try more than once.

Experience a Hippie makeover

If you are on a sabbatical from work or in college, then this is the perfect time to get a makeover and by that, we mean the Hippie rasta way.  The barbershops at Kasol are more than equipped to make you a Hippie in a matter of minutes from a funky hairdo to lulus and dreadlocks, the barbershops here can do it all.

There is something about Kasol that always has travellers of all kind leaving with a good positive feel after visiting the place. That’s more to do with the fact that the place is so small yet bustling with foreigners and Indians alike. It’s a place which will make you feel good.
