Konkan Sea Fort History: Murud Janjira, Maharashtra 

The name Janjira is a corrupted form of 'zizera', which, in Arabic, means 'an island' 

Situated on an oval-shaped rock off the Arabian Sea coast near the port city of Murud, 165 km  south of Mumbai

The sea fort, built by Malik Ambar, who served the Sultan of Ahmednagar and belonged to the famous Nizam Shahi dynasty.

Janjira fort was built at the end of the 17th century

Janjira fort has never been conquered by any enemy in its history.

As per the records, even Shivaji could not conquer it although he tried 13 times.

Shivaji’s son Also tried by digging an underwater tunnel to enter but he too failed..

Janjira fort rulers were a Siddi dynasty of Habesha descent

The best time to visit Janjira sea fort is during the dry months from November to May.
