Useful Thai Words

Officially Thailand is known as the Kingdom of Thailand. Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country that has never been ruled by a European power. It is known for its martial arts, beaches, temples, nature, delicious mangoes and strict rules. Thailand is also very popular for the people, the culture, and its cuisine.

Thai people are the main ethnic group of Thailand and the official language of Thailand is Thai, also called Siamese. It is the official and literary language of Thailand, belonging to the Tai language family of Southeast Asia.

Here are few useful Thai words/phrases you should know when you are in Thailand-

1.      Hello = Sawatdii

2.      How are you? = Sabaaidii mai?

3.      I’m fine = Sabaaidii

4.      What country are you from? = Kun maa jaak bprateet arai?

5.      Thank you = Khop kun

6.      Sorry = Khot hort

7.      No problem = Mai bpenrai

8.      Goodbye = Bai

9.      Can you speak English? = Kun pood paasaa anggrit dai mai

10.  What is your name? = Kun chuu arai?

11.  My name is __ = Pŏm / Chán chuu __.

Basic Thai words for questions:

Conversing in Thai is a bit difficult. You need to know a few question words to get your answers.

Where? = Tiinai?

What? = Arai?

When? = Muarai?

How? = Yangngai?

Why? = Tum mai?

Basic Thai words for addressing people:

People are addressed differently based on things like age, gender and social rank. Addressing someone using different words is considered to be disrespectful.

 I (female) = Chán

 I (male) = Pŏmou = Kun

He/She/They = Kao

Female/Male (junior) = Nong

Female/Male (senior) = Pee

You = Kun
