Here is The Land Of Wanderlust’s blueprint to a Assam Meghalaya road trip around the North Eastern states of Assam and Meghalaya. In Assam, we will backpack to Majuli, the largest river island in the world and Kaziranga National Park – the home of the one horn rhino. While in Meghalaya, we will make Shillong our base and visit the cleanest village in Asia and the living root bridge.

It’s a super-fast trip with each day having a lot to do. It kicks off with a bang in Assam and is the only through trip that includes a ferry journey along the way, offering a complete backpacker experience with camping on the banks of the River Umngot in Dawki. But the best stay on this Assam Meghalaya Backpacking Trip will without doubt be the bamboo hut at Majuli; that island will definitely keep a part of your heart. The warmth of the place makes you want to come back for more.
– Arrive in Guwahati by latest 12:00 HRS
– Reach Guwahati at Paltan Bazaar by 13:00 HRS.
– Hop onto the private taxi to Shillong. (99km = 2.5 hours)
– Enroute stop at Umiam Lake
– Visit Wards Lake and the Don Bosco Museum
– Reach Shillong by 3:00 PM and check into a Homestay
– Freshen up and leave for Police Bazaar
– Rest of the evening at leisure.
-> Leave from Shillong by 7 am.
-> Drive to Dawki via Jowai Road.
-> First stop at Krang Suri Waterfall. {84km = 2-3 hrs}
-> Reach Dawki for boating by noon. (Indo-Bangladesh open-border town)
-> Proceed to Darrang village for camping after lunch.
-> Rest of the evening camping by the river Umngot.
– Spend the night by the bonfire & watching the stars in the sky.
-Post breakfast, leave for Cherrapunji sightseeing (54 km = 2-3 hrs)
– First stop is the living root bridge in the village of Riwai.
– Lunch at Mawlynnong, the cleanest village in Asia.
– After that visit Mawsmai Caves , Nohkalikai Falls.
– Return to the Cherrapunji homestay by 7:00 PM
– Rest of the evening at leisure
– Post breakfast, by 08:00 AM, leave for the village of Tyrna.
– Reach the village and hike down the 3000 steps to the base village of Nongriat
– Explore the double-decker root bridge
– Return back to the parking lot before sunset.
– Drive back to the Shillong for the night. (59 km =2-3 hrs)
– Reach Shillong by 5:00 PM
– Spend the evening at leisure.
– Post Breakfast, Leave for Kaziranga National Park. (265 km = 5-6 hours)
– Reach by 7:00 PM and check into a guest house.
– Spend the evening at leisure.
– Leave for an early morning jeep safari in Kaziranga National Park and spot the one-horned rhino of Assam.
– Post breakfast, leave for sightseeing around Kaziranga
– Visit the tea gardens, Orchid Park, and Kokochang Waterfall
– Rest of the evening at leisure.
– Around 6:30 am, leave for an elephant safari.
– Post breakfast, leave for Majuli– the largest river island in the world. (139 km= 5-6 hrs)
– Reach Jorhat and take a two-hour ferry ride from Nemati Ghat to Kamlabari at Majuli.
– Check in to a tribal bamboo hut homestay.
– Spend the rest of the day exploring the nearby villages.
– Post breakfast, leave for Majuli Sightseeing
– Visit the villages of the Mishing tribe
– Try the local rice beer firsthand with the villagers.
– Visit the mask-making village
– Return back to our bamboo homestay by sunset.
– Rest of the evening, spend time chilling with other travellers.
– Post breakfast, leave in the morning by 07:00 HRS (343km = 8-9 hrs)
– Reach Paltan Bazaar Guwahati by 3:00 PM.
