Tips on travelling with your grandparents
As kids all of us have travelled to our native places if not other places with our grandparents. But as adults, this may not be common as grandparents age and grandchildren grow up. However, travelling with the elderly can be a wonderful and enriching experience. Here are some tips for travelling with grandparents:
Table of Contents
1. Plan Ahead:
Plan the trip meticulously, including accommodation, transportation, and activities. Consider your grandparents’ interests, dietary restrictions, mobility issues, and medications.
2. Take It Slow:
Take it slow and flexible. Elderly people might need more time to rest, and you should avoid overexerting them with an overly packed itinerary. Leave room for downtime, leisurely strolls, and naps.
3. Pack Smart:
Pack light and smart. Help them pack by reminding them to bring their medications, comfortable shoes, clothes appropriate for the weather and activities, and other essentials.
4. Accommodations:
Ensure that the accommodation you choose is safe, secure, and comfortable for elderly people. Book a room with accessible features such as grab bars, shower chairs, wheelchair accessibility, and proper lighting.
5. Transportation:
Choose transportation that suits their physical abilities. If they can’t walk long distances, arrange for transportation with minimal walking, or consider renting a wheelchair or scooter.
6. Grandparents Health Concerns:
If any of them have a health condition, consult their doctor before planning the trip to ensure they’re fit to travel. Carry copies of important medical documents, such as prescriptions, medical insurance cards, and emergency contacts.
7. Be Patient:
Finally, be patient with them. Elderly people may have slow mobility, hearing or memory issues, and may need help with simple tasks. Remember, you’re travelling to spend quality time with your grandparents, not to rush to destinations. So, take it easy and enjoy each other’s company.
