Mirissa is the Hippie beach village in southern Sri Lanka. It is a paradise for holiday makers and without a doubt the best beach vibe there is in all of Sri Lanka. Below is a list of things you can consider doing while you are this beach town.
Table of Contents
Stay close to Mirissa beach
Mirissa is all about the beach so staying close to the beach is an absolute must. There are a couple of home stays located uphill from the beach which offer affordable beach view rooms.
Learn how to surf
If you have the time and are up for learning, then this is an absolute must. It’s usually a three-day crash course.
All along the main road which connects to the beach is a galore of shops selling everything from fruits, food and various Sri Lankan souvenirs. It’s worth visiting. You will definitely find something unique.
At various spots along the beach you’ll find a tyre dangling from a rope attached to a coconut tree. Another one of the countless DIY simple yet fun things you’ll find in Sri Lanka. Make sure you take time and swing along while at the beach.
At USD 50 if you bargain well, they will take you in the middle of the ocean to catch a sight of the mighty blue whale. The guys selling the deal are so confident that they even offer a cash back if you don’t get to see the blue whale.
If you’re in for some fun, then join the people playing volleyball on the beach and make some new friends.
Catch the waves
Without a dip in the beach a trip to Mirissa is incomplete. It’s only when you enter the water will you actually soak in the vibe of the place. No matter how hot it is at the beach once you’re in the water you will feel nothing but summer bliss.
The next best thing to do after taking a dip in the water is to come out, order a bottle of beer and chill. It’s the best way to kill time.
All over the beach there are endless beach shacks which serve mouth-watering seafood along with an excellent variety of western food. It’s the perfect place for a romantic dinner if you’re travelling with your better half.
Yes, the sunset is actually golden. You’ll be blown away by what you see when you witness the sunset. It’s just mesmerising. It’s arguably one of the best we have ever seen in all these years.
Hill lock island
A short walk from the beach into the sea and you’ll reach a small hill lock which has become a tourist hotspot to climb. On top of the tiny hill have a look at the beach and the ocean at large.
Nearly every weekend there is a party at the beach at one of the shacks. So if you see a halogen, be around and make sure you attend the party. It’s the closest you can get to a Thailand full moon beach party.
Giant sea turtles
You’ll spot these turtles walking on the beach at night. They are very common in Mirissa. If you go for a boat ride into the ocean, you will definitely spot around a dozen if not more.
Since Mirrissa is a major fishing port you can expect to get pretty much everything the ocean has to offer. Many beach shacks even let you pick your fish from a stall setup mostly a few metres away from the entrance to the restaurant.
There is nothing better than a bottle of beer when you are sitting at the beach with sand in your feet and sea water dripping down your head. Beer is one thing which is easily available.
If speed is your thing then the jet ski ride is the best thing at the beach for you. Rent it for an hour and take it into the ocean for a spin.
An absolute must. The cool breeze and sounds of the ocean is the perfect way to call your days at the beach. The place is extremely safe.
