Batal is a little temporary settlement on the Trans-Himalayan range in Lahaul and Spiti region.
It is the entry point to the Kunzum pass and Chandratal Lake or Moon lake.
Batal is located at a staggering height of 15000 ft. The cold landscapes of Batal are scenic and mesmerizing, one can’t get enough of the views.
Here are a few you can do when visiting Batal :
1. Visit Chandratal Lake or Moon lake
Chandratal, the moon lake is a beautiful and pristine himalayan lake at an elevation of 14000 ft. It is situated in the Spiti region of Lahaul and Spiti district. It is also known as the lake of the moon due to its crescent shape. There are vast meadows around the lake. In summers the meadows are carpeted with number of varieties of wild flowers. This lake is around 14 km away from Batal which takes an hour or more to reach by vehicle. The road to lake is very dangerous and narrow. One can also trek alongside the Chandra river to reach this lake.
There are many campsites 1 km before the lake where you have to park your vehicles and then trek the rest. Once you reach the lake you will be awe-struck by the beauty it holds. This place is beyond imagination. Everyone deserves to see the beauty that nature holds.
Legend has that Chandratal lake lies in the proximity of a place from where Lord Indra’s chariot picked up Yudhishthir for the ride to heaven
2. Enjoy a stay at iconic Chacha Chachi dhaba
Also known as the Chandra Dhaba, the Chachi and Chacha are famous for their hospitality and helpful nature. They provide delicious food, useful accessories and accommodation of travelers. The owner Dorje Bodh has rescued some travelers from a harsh weather storm. He has received a bravery award for the same.

Batal is in the middle of nowhere. At night when the sky is pitch dark you get to see incredible colours of the milky way. It is truly a blissful experience to witness the galaxy and over big barren lands with mighty peaks as the backdrop. Do plan an stargazing outing when in Spiti.
Batal is the starting point for several treks to glaciers, glacial lakes and the base camps of several peaks rising over 6500 metres. The nearest glacier originating from Chandrabhaga peaks is just 2 hours away from Batal.
Bara Shigri is the largest glacier in Himachal Pradesh. It is around 40 km from Batal which take roughly 4-5 hours to reach.
This glacier also feeds the chenab river. This glacier is 25 km long and 3 km wide.
There is another glacier, the smaller one called Chhota Shigri.
5. The thrilling road trip from Gramphu to Batal
The valley is among most beautiful ones. The valley’s terrain and roads changes erratically as you reach from one village to another. These roads are treacherous like thorns of roses. But the view that it offers is probably much more beautiful than roses.
