Bossa cabana

The cabana stay beach village: Boossa, Sri Lanka

Boossa is a small laid back backpacker beach village located in Galle district of the southern province of Sri Lanka. Boossa is situated around 13 km (30 minutes) from Galle town.

There are multiple ways to reach Boossa from Galle town. The first is to take a local bus, this is the most economical option, with tonnes of buses plying the route all day. It’s also a value for money deal. The other option is to either take a Tuktuk, which will surely be a steep deal, try your best to haggle and reduce the cost by at least 30% of what they ask for.

The final option is to book a Grab (taxi app) which is the most economical and comfortable way to reach but at the same time, it’s not always easy to get a cab, since most of them cancel and very few taxis are available on the app in this region.

From the minute you arrive at Boossa, you’ll understand that the place is lost in time with a very vintage feel and setup to everything. From the houses which are still pretty much traditional with tiled roofs and wooden planks as locks.

The inhabitants are extremely welcoming towards tourist and will go out of their way to help even if the language is a barrier they will try their best.

Once in Boossa,

The main attraction is the beach. A secluded path of white sand which is around 200 metres in length is all that the beach out here is. But this is the only stretch where you’ll find barely any crowd even during peak tourist season. Boossa is just a place which is pretty much offbeat and not many end up visiting while on their trip around the island country.

The beach is perfect for body surfing with the waves coming in at a gentle pace and not too huge to glide back to the shore and have some fun while in the water.

While in Boossa, another must-do thing is to stay in a beach shack Cabana. This is arguably the closest you can get to staying at the beach and is also the best way to experience the place.  These beach cabanas are all over the village on either side of the road and are available in various types to suit the needs of a backpacker to a family holiday seeker.

Boossa beach shack experience

The backpacker cabanas are very basic and consist of nothing more than just a wooden house structure with a bed, a charging point and a mosquito net. They don’t have fans or attached washrooms owning to the space constraints since they are so compact. There is only enough space for two humans and their backpacks. Even though the washrooms are common, they are pretty well maintained and kept clean at all times.

Food options are in plenty with the regular spring hoppers, fried rice and the regular Sri Lankan curry and rice. If you like experimenting and want to try variations, then the pizzas served in Boossa are worth a try. Unlike the regular pizza crust, this one is homemade and is a bit spongy. It’s definitely worth trying out.

While travelling to Boossa, it’s important to keep in mind that the place has no ATM or money exchange centres. You need to get enough money along or you’ll have to make the trip back to Galle town to get things exchanged.

The best time to visit Boossa is during the dry season from November to April. With December and January being the peak season, since the mercury level dips by a fraction of two.

Just like any other beach destination, the clothing requirement out here is pretty much the same – beachwear and sun glares. That’s all you need while you’re lazing around.

Boossa is the kind of place which is so offbeat and random that barely anyone who has travelled to Sri Lanka will have even heard about this beach village.  It’s the perfect place if you’re hunting for something offbeat and raw, an ideal place where as a backpacker, you’ll fall in love with the vibe of the place.

This is the kind of place where you’ll wake up daily to an amazing view of the ocean, and you’ll feel like staying at least a couple of night chilling in a beach shack by the beach, either sipping on some chilled beers or reading a book to beat the heat.
