10 Fun things to experience in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Set at an elevation of 10,000 feet above sea level, Tawang is truly a mystical destination which is blessed with natural scenery in abundance. The town is known to house a variety of attractions which makes people visit the place throughout the year. Major attractions include monasteries, waterfalls and snow-capped mountains. Tawang monastery, Bong Bong waterfall, Sela Pass and Pangang Teng Tso Lake are some of the most popular attractions.

Tawang monastery

The biggest attraction is the magical Tawang Gompa, founded in 1681. Reputedly the world’s second-largest Buddhist-monastery.

  • The ancient and modest Urgeyling Gompa is where the sixth Dalai Lama was born.
  • The second-largest monastery in Asia and the largest in India is the Tawang monastery. It was established by Mera Lama Lodre Gyasto during the 17th century. It is situated amidst a picturesque landscape. Followers of Buddhism attach high importance to the monastery, as it is a centre where young Buddhist monks learn about the essence of Buddhist culture. The amazing collection of manuscripts, books and other artifacts in the monastery increases its value multifold.
  • The cosy Dragon Restaurant is Tawang’s best eatery, serving freshly made local dishes such as churpa, a delicious fermented-cheese broth.
  • Tawang’s convivial bar comes alive in the evenings with chilled beers, pleasant company, fairy lights on the walls.
  • In the heart of town, Se La Restaurant has a standard range of tasty Indian, Chinese and Tibetan dishes. It’s located on the first floor.
  • For a few days in February, Tawang hosts the dazzling Tibetan New Year festival of Losar, marked by prayer sessions and colourful masks.
  • There is a small but interesting museum in Tawang that contains images, robes, telescopic trumpets and ancient manuscripts, along with some personal items of the sixth Dalai Lama.
  • Many natural wonders were so far mentioned as tourist destinations, as their compelling beauty is irresistible. Now, a ‘wonder man’ has to be visited, as his valor is compelling. The ‘wonder man’ does not exist now but his memories do. Jaswant Singh Rawat of the Indian Army fought a lone battle against the invading Chinese troop during Indo-China war in 1962. He stood his position for three days at an altitude of 10000 feet without giving up until his last breath. Located 21 kms from Sela Pass towards the direction of Tawang, the post held by him to fight the Chinese army is named as Jaswant Garh in honour of his memory.
  • Bap Teng Kang Waterfall is situated 82 km away from Tawang. This 100 feet high waterfall is one of the most visited tourist spots in Tawang. Set amidst lush greenery, the waterfall offers a spectacular sight to nature lovers. Popularly referred to as BTK waterfall, Bap Teng Kang’s serenity elevates your spirits. The crystal clear water encourages you to indulge in swimming.
