Motithang Takin Preserve: Say a warm hello to Bhutan’s national animal

The Motithang Takin Preserve is a sanctuary located in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. It was established in 2005 with the aim of preserving and protecting the national animal of Bhutan, the takin. The animal is a unique and rare mammal found in the Eastern Himalayas.

The sanctuary provides a natural habitat for takins and ensures their well-being. The preserve is spread over a vast area with lush green forests and beautiful landscapes. Visitors can observe these fascinating creatures up close and learn about their conservation.

It is also known as the Takin Preserve or Motithang Takin Preserve, is a small wildlife sanctuary in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. The preserve is home to the national animal of Bhutan, the Takin (Budorcas taxicolor whitei), an unusual and unique mammal that resembles a cross between a goat and an antelope.

The animal was once found throughout the forests of Bhutan, but due to habitat loss and poaching, their population declined significantly. The Preserve was established in 1988 to protect and conserve the species. Today, the preserve houses around 100 Takins in a natural habitat, allowing visitors to observe these fascinating animals up close.

Motithang Takin Preserve

Apart from the the national animal of Bhutan, the preserve also has a small collection of other native wildlife, such as Himalayan black bears, serows, and barking deer. The main objective of the preserve is to breed and release Takins back into the wild, ensuring the long-term survival of this unique species.

Open to public

The place is open to the public, and visitors can enter the sanctuary for a small fee. The preserve is located near the Motithang Butterfly Park and the Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang), making it convenient for tourists to visit these attractions in one day.

Motithang Takin Preserve

While visiting the preserve, visitors must follow certain guidelines to ensure the well-being of the animals. These include maintaining a safe distance from the animals, not feeding them, and avoiding loud noises or sudden movements.

In addition to it, Thimphu offers several other attractions for tourists, such as the Tashichho Dzong (the fortress of the glorious religion), the National Memorial Chorten, and the weekend market. The city also provides a glimpse into Bhutan’s unique culture, architecture, and way of life.
