Hikkaduwa is just a stretch of beach along the southern coast of Galle in South Sri Lanka. But this small stretch of beach will leave you with some of the happiest memories from this island country.
So what makes Hikkaduwa worth the visit is the coral life which is literally less than 5 meters from the shore line. All you need to do is be mindful of the corals around which can literally end up cutting your skin. Barring that the rest of the whole experience is nothing but bliss full.
Once you reach the beach, you’ll see plenty of beach Shacks and stalls selling snorkeling and diving gear. Usually a starting rate of USD 3-5 depending on how good the product is. Make sure you get them and a good one because unlike other places here you just have to spend on renting the gear and the rest is pretty much out of the box in the sea, you step in and be amazed.
A good time to go snorkeling is in the first half of the day when the sun is out and the water is clear. It’s the most ideal time to spot fishes and even the occasional sea turtle which are in plenty in this part of the world.
So the future you swim the more you’ll get to see so much so that a kilometre into the sea and the locals claim that you’ll see over a 100 sea turtles chilling mid way away from the hustle and bustle of the humans at the beach.
Another cool thing worth doing at the beach if money is no bar is taking the glass boat ride into the sea. It coast around $20-25 but it’s worth the adventure trill you’ll be taken up and close to the giant sea turtles and being able to pet a turtle in the middle of the ocean is pretty much a once in lifetime experience for everyone.
These glass boats give you a glimpse into marine life deeper into the ocean. The whole boat ride is for roughly 45-55 minutes including swimming to see the turtles.
Make sure you don’t miss out on spotting the sea turtles.
