Planning a road trip to Leh-Ladakh is harder than deciding which movie to watch over the weekend. Deciding the month of travel to Ladakh is even harder. The month of June marks the start of summer in Leh-Ladakh. It is also the time when the season starts officially in Ladakh region with the opening of the Manali-Leh highway. Around 60% travelling to Ladakh wait for the Manali route to open and June is the month when the road starts to open and travel becomes a lot easier. 

Best flight deals 

June is usually when you get the best flight deals in and out of Leh-Ladakh but that’s with conditions. It’s the last minute when you check the flight tickets, you might get a steal deal to fly in and out of Leh. It’s because with the roads to Leh opening properly from both Srinagar and Manali, a lot of travel agents who had bulk booked, let tickets go and you might even find yourself flying in and out of Leh in ₹12,000.

Roads are open 

Yes, all the roads, even the Manali-Leh highway and roads within Leh-Ladakh are open from June. So you can actually travel anywhere and everywhere in Ladakh. Since the roads have just opened to remote parts of Ladakh, you will end up having a more authentic experience. 

Markets are bustling 

If you like shopping, then June is the month to travel. Since that’s when most of the Tibetan markets and shops in Leh main town get the bulk of their new stock for the season. May or July is also good for shopping but all the best things reach Leh in June. So if you want a souvenir which is rare and out of the box, then June is the month for you to go around hunting for it. 

Food is great 

June is the month when all the chefs return to Leh or arrive in Ladakh. Since the road from Manali is open for the local bus. So if you are a foodie, then June is when you will get the best food experience in Ladakh. The chefs are fresh and excited to serve some really great food which will make your mouth water.  

Weather is warm 

Being the start of summer, you can expect the weather to start getting a bit warmer. So if the cold weather of Leh-Ladakh has got you worried, then June is the month when you will experience a mix of both worlds. Warm days when the sun is out and cold nights. You will definitely need woollens, but the intensity of the cold will be far lesser as compared to what it will be in May. 

Snowfall at passes 

You can expect snowfall at Khardungla and Changla in the entire month of June. Such is the weather at the passes, that snowfall in June has caused even a 24-48 hour road block. So when it starts to snow at the passes, make sure you get in your vehicle and zip across, so you are not caught in the middle of a snow storm. 

Night sky is clear 

If stargazing and night sky photography is what you want to experience, then June is a great month. The sky is clear and the night sky in the villages of Hunder, Turtuk and Thangse is a treat to the eyes. You will end up seeing over 10+ shooting stars on a clear night.

Rafting is 14-28 km, you can decide which one you and your group want to opt for. June is the start of rafting season, so expect everything to be in top condition when it comes to rafting. 

Biking around Ladakh 

Yes, biking in Leh-Ladakh is still a bucket list adventure and if you plan on biking around Ladakh, then June is the best time. If you want to hire a bike in Leh town, then in the month of June, you will get the bikes in the best condition.  What more reason would you want to go around biking. But make sure, you check the weather for the week, since unexpected snow fall at the passes can prove to be a disaster to your biking trip.
