Moirang to Thanga: The journey

Moirang is a small town in the Indian state of Manipur. It is situated approximately 45 km south of the state capital, Imphal. It has an area of 269 sq.km with a population of 62,187 in 67 villages.

Thanga is one of the close sub-district to Loktak Lake. There are fifteen small villages inside Thanga with a population of above ten thousand. It has two sub-centre.

To reach Thanga, there are a couple of ways. The most available option is shared auto or tempo. Another option is to go by your own private vehicle.

If you are coming by a shared vehicle from Imphal to Moirang, you will have to get down at Moirang bazaar. The taxi/winger will drop you at the post office at Moirang bazaar. Straight ahead you will see a keithel (bazaar), follow the road and you will see a Y point where one goes straight to the INA museum and other one goes to the right side which heads to Keibul Lamjao National Park.

Take the right route and a little ahead you will cross a bridge and again you will get a Y point. The right one heads to the national park and the left one goes to Thanga. Once you take the left road, you will see a lot of tempos/autos standing, they will ask you if you want to go to Thanga.

Sometimes when the tempo is full, people opt to sit on the rooftop of the tempo for the ride. Local people usually do that and even you can do it if you want to see Loktak Lake. It's amazing but also a bumpy ride. Make sure that you cover your ears because if you go in the wintertime, the air is colder compared to other seasons. That can be a problem for your health, otherwise, it's fine.

Moirang to Thanga is a 10 km journey starting from Sendra road. Once you start your journey to Thanga, you will come across a couple of shops on both sides. Later, you will witness the mighty and beautiful Loktak Lake. After heading 2km more, you will see a tourist boating center to your left side which is famous for motorboat rides around Loktak Lake.

On the right-hand side, you will see Sendra Park. It's a park where you can enjoy the floral beauty of Loktak. Do check out this place.

When you go ahead, you can see houses. You cross this and see fishing nets spread wide over Loktak Lake. A little ahead you will see a primary school on your left-hand side, from here Thanga village starts. The tempo will take you from Ima Leimarel Community hall. You can get down to go to Maipakchao homestay in Thanga. It's the first homestay of Thanga and is the most authentic way of living you can get.

Please Google the name and get the details prior, if you want to stay in Maipakchao homestay. You can even call for directions from the community hall. It is nearby. There's a viewpoint above the community hall which can give you a panoramic view of Loktak Lake. It's good for both, sunrise and sunset.

The tempo goes ahead till the iron bridge in Thanga. From there you can see two ways going ahead, the left one goes to Oinam village and the right one goes to Vamukow village. If you are planning to go to Karang village, take the Vamukow road and tell the driver that you want to get down at the Karang ferry point.

Karang can be only reached by ferry as it's an island near Thanga. Locals are helpful there, you can ask for directions if you lose your way. The only thing is that you need to remember the correct name of the place where you want to go.
