There are many lakes in the Himalayan region such as Pangong Tso in Ladakh, Tsomgo in Sikkim. There is one lake in eastern Ladakh which is more beautiful than the much-hyped Pangong Tso.
Not many people know about this lake. People who want to explore other tourist places or people who are into travelling know about this lake. Tso Moriri, Situated in Changthang region in Korzok village of Eastern Ladakh at an altitude of 4,522 m (14,836 ft) is one of the most breathtaking lakes in the world. One cannot define the beauty of this lake.
In winter, the lake freezes for more than three months and you can walk ride or drive on this lake. The water of this lake is brackish or salty so it cannot be used for any household purposes. The lake comes in the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve. It is the largest of the high altitude lakes entirely within Ladakh.
The lake is situated to the southeast of Leh. It is 240 kilometres from Leh. There is another road to reach this lake from Pangong Tso which takes you to one of the remotest areas of Ladakh – Changthang region. This is mostly preferred by tourists and also considered as the one of the most beautiful drives in the Ladakh region.
The distance between Pangong Tso to Tso Moriri is 235 kilometres. There is a third option which is not much recommended from Debring near More plains on the Manali-Leh Highway. To reach this lake, one must have their own vehicle as there is no transportation available on this side of Ladakh. There is only one bus from Leh that too once in a week and it is not reliable. On the way, you might see different species of birds and many nomadic people with their livestock.
If you’re planning to visit this lake, then you have to stay there for at least one night. Not many options are there to stay, it is advisable to book in advance through an agent in Leh. You can get stays directly also, but due to there being fewer guest houses and tents, one might not get to stay. The stays are expensive also. Staying in a homestay is the best option as the tent owner will charge more money and staying in a tent is not a good idea as the temperature goes down at night.
Due to its remoteness, you will not find many options for food. You will get food in your stay only if it is included. You can expect basic food like dal, rice, vegetables and eggs. Thukpa and momos are available anytime of the day. And if you are staying in a local’s house, you can ask them to cook some local dishes.
The best time to visit this lake is in summer from May to September. You will find horse grazing land of different types, migrating birds. Summer is not that cold to stay. There are some travellers who want to see the frozen lake who visit in the month of January and February. But at this time, the day temperature remains under 5 degrees and it goes to – 20 degrees at night. And it is not advisable to visit this region in winters.
If you’re planning to visit Ladakh and have extra days then you should visit this beautiful lake. Then you can differentiate between Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri which is more beautiful.
