At Pangong Tso we met this beautiful soul, Veronica originally from Cuba. She has been staying in Ladakh for the past 12 years. She’s seen it all she says. From the start of tourism in Ladakh to the time when there were only Army officials here.
The first time she came here was in 2012 because her friends forced her to join them on their visit to India. Not really interested in travelling at that time, she found it absurd to come visit India, as she knew nothing about this place. But after all her friends were not going to take no for an answer, so she had to tag along. They first did all of South India, then came up North and that was it for Veronica.
She was mesmerised with the culture and beauty. They stayed here for a good 45 days after which it was time to leave. Like everyone she didn’t want to leave she however had to.
Veronica went back to Cuba and that was when her life changed. She came to an understanding that she couldn’t live there anymore. The weather, the people, the lifestyle everything just irritated her.
She wanted to leave and wanted to live in the Indian mountains forever. She had the money and she had the will to travel alone. So without giving it a second thought she packed her bags and left for the mountains just 12 days after reaching back home.
Once she landed in Leh, later that year (2012) she had arrived on the 24th of October, just as winter was setting in. She was awestruck with the beauty of the place once again. This time it was even more beautiful than the last time.
She instantly decided she would never leave. “Ladakh is heaven on Earth,” said Veronica. She’s already decided that she would love to die here when she’s done with life and also says she will be buried here. The very fact that someone from a far corner of the world without even knowing that a place named Ladakh even exists, after one random, forceful visit fell so deeply in love with the place that its become her new home.
Kudos to Veronica and many more like her, meeting people like these, getting such beautiful stories is the reason why we love to travel. Hopefully the next visit we make it to Ladakh, we would bump into Veronica again and get a little more of her experience from this majestic place.
