5 Fun Foods to eat in Sri Lanka

The food there is delicious and here are what are must tries when in the Lankan lounge for those who like to eat.

1. Egg Hoppers with Sambol

This dish is considered to be the staple dish in Sri Lanka cuisine. The batter is made up of rice along with coconut milk. And the best part is the way they make it. They apply the batter on a funnel type food gear and the batter takes the shape of the funnel. Then the person will break the egg and place it in the centre of the batter. Along with the hopper, you will also be given a chutney made of coconut which is the Sambol which has a dry sweet flavor to it which complements the hopper perfectly.

2. Kottu Roti from Sri Lanka

Prawn Kuttu Sri Lanka

This is the signature dish of Sri Lanka. And if one doesn’t try this dish, then I am sorry, your trip to Sri Lanka will always remain incomplete. Kottu Roti is made of Godamba roti wherein the roti is cut into small pieces, and then follows the veggies, and some chicken meatballs and the secret spices which gives the dish an authentic aroma and taste.

The best part is once all the ingredients are added to the finely cut roti, two blades are used to cut, chop and mix everything together and the loud noise of cling-clang of those blades makes it a sight you can’t miss. Step down from your hotel-stay during the evening time and all you will hear is the loud steel- smashing noise throughout the street. Yes, your guess is right- It is the Kottu Roti in making.

3. Lamprais

Crab curry in Hikkaduwa

There is art in anything and everything. And this dish totally justifies the statement. This dish consists of stock-cooked small grained rice, meat curry ( chicken/ pork/ lamb/ beef), some eggplant pickle, onion chutney also called the onion sambol, some shrimp paste, and few more side dishes. And all of this is then placed inside a banana leaf and is baked in the oven. So when you open the leaf, what you get is a mixture of flavors in aroma as well as in taste. It is a must try dish, you simply can’t miss it.

4. Chicken/ Mutton Brain Masala

No, this is not a proper curry and neither is a completely dry starter. It is more of a starter with very little gravy just to mix up the pieces. And the most interesting part about this dish is the moment you put the piece inside your mouth, it has an extreme creamy flavor to it. And the masala complements the creaminess and tenderness of the meat very well. You sure have to try this dish.

5. Polos (Green Jackfruit curry)

Sri Lankan Curry and Rice

This dish is packed with flavors and is the perfect substitute for chicken and other meats. This dish has a creamy and sourish taste to it because of coconut milk and tamarind present. And the Sri Lankan spices give the perfect taste and aroma to it. Surely a must try dish.

The above are the must-try dishes when you visit Sri Lanka. Apart from the above dishes, there is Isso Vadai, Vegetable Roti, Fish Ambul Thiyal, etc to name a few out of the many amazing dishes that the country has to offer. This country is truly a paradise for food-lovers.
