11 Fun things to experience in Demul, Spiti Valley

Demul, a small village hidden deep in the mountains of Spiti Valley, With the scarcity of local buses to this village, it is best to hire a cab, come by your own vehicle or hitchhike while enjoying the scenic beauty.

1.At the entrance of Demul village, you’ll be greeted by smiling faces, welcoming you by saying “julley”, which means hello in the local language. You’d be greeted by every villager passing by while strolling through the village. 

2.Fun is an overload in this village with rosy-cheeked children who have a running nose enjoying the donkey ride which can be your once in a lifetime experience, too. Donkeys are also used here to carry heavy loads such as the stones used for construction. 

3.Out here your only option is a homestay in Demul and you’d be more than happy about this. The warm, caring and helpful nature of the caretakers will take your heart away. 

4.While you are at the homestay, accompany your home caretaker to the house barn. Watch the cows being milked might sound like just another thing but to experience it after living an urban life for more than two decades, it is an exciting experience.

5.Take the path less travelled and you’d never be disappointed. You might come across unexpectedly beautiful birds such as ‘yellow-billed choughs’, ‘rock bunting’ and more.

6.While wandering through the village, you’d come across big, beautiful yak. Though giant yet peaceful at sight. “Fear not” is what the villagers will tell you as you’ll see kids running round the yak fearlessly. P.S – Don’t mistake the cows for yak. 

7.Despite the few houses in the small village, you’ll find a beautiful monastery at the peak of the village. At the monastery, find yourself at peace watching the beautiful landscape spread across you.

8.Brace yourself for the mesmerising sunsets and sunrises. Find your spot to sit and relax while watching the sunlight through the snow clad mountains around Demul

9.Don’t miss out on the local delicacies that are potato momos and rotis with Spiti ghee. Just as mouth-watering as they sound, it’s a blissful experience to eat and cherish them.

10.While exploring the village, take some time out from your cameras and enjoy playing with the kids. The locals here enjoy playing soccer and cricket the most.
