Meghalaya is a hilly state in the northeast of India.  The meaning of Meghalaya in Sanskrit is “the abode of clouds”. Meghalaya is a beautiful place as it offers a variety of sights, activities, food and festivals to the tourists.

The state can be picked as a holiday destination as it will make your trip and your money worth it. If you want to reach here you have to book a flight till Guwahati and take a bus from further as there is no train facility connectivity in Meghalaya after Guwahati.

The capital of Meghalaya is Shillong and it is the most urbanised area you will see in the entire state. If you are visiting Meghalaya on a backpacker budget here are the 8 things you can do and enjoy the most.

1. Stay in Meghalaya

There are plenty of hotels to stay in Meghalaya and you can book a hotel or an OYO also at a low price. Staying in Shillong is best as every place is nearby to it and it would not be a problem to come back by night. From mid-ranged hotels to 5-star hotels there are numerous choices to stay here.

2. Shillong golf course

It is one of the largest golf course in the world which comes in the way of Guwahati to Shillong which should be visited definitely. You will get amazed by its greenery and scenic beauty. the United States Golf Association and Museum have given it the title of ‘Glen eagle of the East’. On a height of 5200 feet altitude, it was established 9 hole golf course in 1898. You can spend a great time there and click plenty of photos there.

3. Wards lake

5. Nohkalikai Waterfalls and 7 Sister waterfalls

Nohkaalikai is one of the highest waterfalls in India which about 1100 feet which is a must-visit. There are a total of 7 waterfalls as the name represents which makes its way down to the east Khasi hills to the plains of Bangladesh. This is also the fourth highest waterfall in India with a height of 1035 feet.

6. Mawsmai Cave

Inside the cave, you can see the formation of stalactites and stalagmites. The entrance of the cave is quite large but the exit is not.  In some of the part, you have to kneel down and bend our head to go forwards.

7. Living root bridge

This is situated 2 kms before Mawlynnong village. Trek begins from the parking lot to reach this bridge and the trek is about 1-1.5 kms each way. To pass this bridge you have to pay a small amount here and can’t stand on the bridge it is just to pass by and you can enjoy the beauty of river flowing under this bridge while crossing it.

8. Shillong peak

It is the highest peak of this place which is 6446 feet which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the entire city.
