Backpacking across the land locked country of Nepal

The landlocked country of Nepal is a hidden gem amidst the Himalayan mountains. A true traveller’s nirvana, this place has a lot to offer from the surreal experience of Nepalese culture at Kathmandu to the buzzing nightlife of Thamel.

Home to the highest mountain range in the world, the Himalayas and the tallest mountain, Mt Everest. Nepal is best known for its trekking trails attracting trekkers from around the world who are captivated by the great Himalayas. Kathmandu acts as a shopper’s stop for these trekkers who can buy trekking gear along with winter outfits best suited for the activity and weather.

The best time to visit Nepal is from March to May and September to November. The festival of Dussehra is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm for 10 days. During those 10 days, most of the shops are closed since the locals themselves go on holidays. Since, it’s tourist friendly there are a lot of accommodations varying from guest houses to luxury hotels to avail.

The 14th century Boudhanath stupa in Kathmandu is the largest stupa in Nepal. It’s a meditative monument where you can actually participate in group meditations. The Nepalese people call it “chorten chenpo” and it is a sacred site for Tibetan Buddhists. You will see a lot of devotees in and around the stupa since it’s a famous pilgrim site too.

The Kathmandu durbar square is a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the three squares within Kathmandu valley. It is an essential site for Buddhist and Hindu rituals, holy ceremonies, royal events and the king’s coronation. It’s especially heavily crowded during festivals like Dussehra. 

Boating in Pokhara is one of the exhilarating Activities in Nepal. The splendid Phewa lake is the best place for canoeing. You even get an option for pedal driven boats, row boats and sailboats and prices are charged as per the option. 

Ever dreamt of floating through the sky? Paragliding at Pokhara is the best thing for thrill seeking people. Pokhara is blessed with stable weather conditions, a safe take off location and landing zone along with epic view of the surroundings. 

You can always wander around the streets of Thamel where you can try out locals delicacies from street stalls like momos, a Nepali version of pani puri and Chinese food. The western culture has also influenced Nepal well enough that there are bakeries selling a variety of pastries.

The night life of Thamel is something to be experienced with a lot of pubs and clubs playing their own music and having their own vibe. You will find restaurants in every lanes and by-lanes offering diverse cuisines from around the world.

The streets of Thamel has distinctive products like masks made out of animal skin, Kashmiri carpets, yak milk soap and even jewellery which is especially cheaper in Nepal.
