Alibaug with Kids: 10 Fun Reasons to Visit

Whether you prefer a ferry ride or a scenic drive, Alibaug is a fantastic choice for a family getaway. With its clean beaches, diverse accommodation options, and abundance of activities, it’s the perfect short escape from Mumbai city. The reason why I chose Alibaug is because we just had two days and had to make the most of it. My son loves to play in the sand with his beach toys. Here are 10 reasons why Alibaug with kids is a must-do trip.

1. Sandy beaches 

Alibaug has a vast coastline. The popular beaches are Alibaug beach, Kashid beach, and Nagaon beach. There are offbeat beaches like Kihim beach, Varsoli beach, Awas beach, and Revdanda, which are gaining popularity now. One of the major reasons to visit Alibaug with kids is that the beaches in Alibaug are sandy and, yes, clean. Some beaches have rocky patches interspersed with long stretches of sandy shoreline, so extra caution is advised while swimming. During low tide, however, the rocky sections are generally less of a concern. My son loves playing with his beach toys in the sand, which makes Alibaug with kids a perfect choice for a fun and relaxing family getaway.

2. Ferry ride 

Kids love the ferry ride. It’s something different from the daily transport options you see. When visiting Alibaug with kids, taking the ferry ride adds to the fun. You get to see birds and so many other boats. The ferry ride is a short 1.5 hr ride from Gateway of India to Mandwa jetty. You can also opt for the speedboat, which reaches in 30- 45 mins. Now Alibaug also has the M2M RORO boats, which can take in your vehicle. So the accessibility to Alibaug is easier than before. To make your weekend getaway easier, a ferry ride is a must when visiting Alibaug with kids.  

3. Tumtum Ride 

Kids do enjoy the Tumtum ride. My 3-year-old son is crazy about rickshaws in Mumbai, and after seeing a bigger one in Alibaug, he was overjoyed. Tumtum is a rickshaw that can accommodate at least 7-8 passengers and is one of the modes of transport within Alibaug. So this tumtum ride is a must when visiting Alibaug with kids. We don’t get to see tumtums in Mumbai, so it adds to a bit of an adventure. 

4. Historic Forts 

When you think of heading to Alibaug for a weekend getaway, a visit to the fort seems incomplete. Alibaug has several forts such as Kolaba Fort, Korlai Fort, Revdanda Fort, Khubladha Fort, Hirakot Fort and Murud-Janjira Fort. The most popular fort is the Murud Janjira, which is close to Kashid. Please research before visiting certain forts, as some are accessible during low tide. Some are totally in ruins, and hardly anything exists to see. Some have restricted access, and some have a short trek. The only forts worth visiting are Kolaba Fort, Korlai Fort, and Murud Janjira Fort. One of the reasons to visit Alibaug with kids is a visit to one of the forts. 

5. Beach activities 

The beaches in Alibaug have several beach activities like a tonga ride, Horse riding, ATV ride, and Cycles. Kids enjoy all these beach activities. So one of the major reasons to visit Alibaug with kids is to give these beach activities a go. My son enjoyed the ATV ride so much that we did 2 rounds. The best time for the ATV ride would be in the evening between 5- 6 pm. In that case, you’ll be avoiding the afternoon heat. 

6. Seafood 

The food in Alibaug is delicious. Alibaug is famous for Konkan-based seafood. You’ll be surprised to see many restaurants and cafes serving all types of meals. I would recommend having Poha, Bhurjee for breakfast, then a Pomfret thali or Surmai thali for lunch, along with the Bombil Rawa fry. For dinner, you can have Prawn thali, or any other seafood. Alibaug with kids will seem incomplete without trying the seafood.

7. Beautiful sunsets 

Sunsets always make a good picture day for a family photo. The sunset on the Alibaug beaches is when the sky paints a pretty picture, and you have to make the most of it. So do make the most of the evening by clicking pictures and also watching the sunset with your family. You can use it as your phone wallpaper. Watching the sunset on an Alibaug trip with kids is a good experience. 

8. Water sports for older kids 

To add to the fun, Alibaug beaches have plenty of water sports. The popular beaches have more options compared to the lesser-known beaches. The water sports found at Alibaug beaches are jet skiing, parasailing, banana boat rides, speedboat and bumper tube rides. Older kids do enjoy these water sports a lot. It makes for good family bonding time. Most of the water sports start in the morning, from 10:00 am till evening, 6:00 pm. 

9. Short Beach Escape 

Many of us have children who love the beach vibe and can’t get enough of their holidays in Goa. But making a trip to Goa or any other beach town in the busy life from Mumbai is a tough choice for most parents. That’s where this coastline becomes a blessing for us parents. Alibaug with kids hence becomes a perfect short beach escape. Be it for just a one-night weekend stay or over the long weekend, it’s simply perfect. Add to the fact that the coastline has over 10+ beaches which you can explore with your kids. 

10. Homestays. 

I have said it in the past and will always stick to the fact that homestays are the best way to experience a place with your children. Your children will learn so much when they live with another family in their home. Alibaug with kids in a homestay, which has other children from the host family, is just a super way for the city kids to blend and learn the way of life from the coastal kids. From learning to climb a tree to exploring the village with a host their age, homestays are simply the most fun way for your children to have a blast.

For me personally, homestays always have the edge since they have a more personal feel to them, which goes a long way in helping your children get a real-world feel of the place they are visiting as compared to staying at a luxury resort, which is a disconnect from the reality of the place.  There are many homestays along this coastline which will help make your Alibaug with kids trip a memorable experience

Alibaug with Children has so many positives, from being close to Mumbai to the various modes of transport which kids will enjoy, and plenty of different sandy beaches. For many parents like us, Alibaug with kids seems like a plausible choice instead of Goa. Beach.. Sand… adventure activities and lots of unforgettable memories.
