Where the Lamas stop to say ‘Hello’: Peokar, Himachal Paradesh

Peokar is a tiny remote offbeat village that is located opposite the district headquarters of Keylong across the Bhaga river, in the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh and is located at an altitude of 11,854 feet above sea-level (3613 m).

Peokar

This remote village of Peokar is easily approachable from the town of Keylong. The best way to get to Peokar is to hike from Keylong, this hike is very easy and takes around 45 to 60 minutes. Hikers need to cross a wooden bride to reach the other side of the river Bhaga. There is also an option of hiring a taxi from Keylong to the village. The taxi ride takes around the same time as the hike since the road leading to this village goes all around the valley.

Peokar

Peokar is a village that is built on the slopes of the Trans-Himalayas and so even after reaching the base of the village, one has to hike to wander through the village. Peokar unlike the remaining villages in the valley has plenty of greenery and a very calm and peaceful feel to the place.

The houses in the village are made of stone walls and all the houses have a small animal pen which have a couple of cows and a few sheep or goats. Each house also have a huge stack of fire wood which is kept near the animal pen. Fire wood is an important source of energy for the people from Lahaul Valley during the harsh winters.

The inhabitants of Peokar are humble and simple people who earn a living through animal husbandry and by growing a few crops around their village. The main occupation of these people is cattle rearing.

Peokar also has a village monastery which is situated right on top of the village. The only way to reach the monastery is to walk up. The steps leading to the monastery are steep and winding, but getting to the monastery is a must for everyone who comes to this village.

The Lamas of this monastery are very happy to see travellers come to their home. They are so exited that they will all stop their work and come say hello. It is very unlikely that you will visit the monastery in Peokar and not be offered juice and a few sweets as prasad.

Generally during the summer months from June to August, the Lamas can be seen during the day time swinging a long cloth sheet which looks very similar to a blanket. This blanket contains medicinal plants that can help cure cough and cold and even fever.

The village of Peokar has no accommodation of any sort and also no eateries of any kind. The best option travellers have is to opt for a home stay by requesting one of the villagers or of making a day hike to this remote village.

Towering trans Himalayan mountains

The best time to visit Peokar is during the summer months from June to September, since the days are generally nice and warm and the nights are cool and pleasant.

Peokar is a village that a tourist will hate and a traveller will love. Peokar is a perfect offbeat village to visit while in Keylong.
