The tasty tale of food in Nepal

Nepal’s different ethnicity brings a multitude of influences in the country’s cuisine. Nepal is a wonderful blend of Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan cultures, it is a delightful place with a cuisine full of complex and satisfying flavours because of the presence of Buddhist and Hindu traditions, variety ranges from veg delicacies to non-vegetarian tasty treats.


Some of the famous foods to try in Nepal

1. Momo – 

Momos in Nepal

The first thing that comes to your mind after hearing it is obviously the momos. Momo and Nepal is like a connection made by God to keep humans happy. This food has gained a lot of popularity in recent years all over India and other parts of the world too. This mouth-watering food has been part of Nepalese cuisine for centuries. The momo is made from refined wheat flour and usually filled with vegetables or meat and served with a delicious dip.

Nowadays there are some interesting variants available like soya momo, cheese momo etc. The buffalo momos are quite famous in Nepal.

2. Dal Bhaat –

Dal Fry + papad + jeera rice

Dal bhaat is like the national dish of Nepal. You will find it available everywhere in the country. Dal bhat consists of steamed rice alongside lentils soup with some pickles, curried dishes, curd or meat. This meal will recharge you up for the day.

3. Pulao-

Rice is widely used all over the country. It is the foundation of Nepalese meal. This fried rice dish is popular among locals and travelers. It is a vegetarian dish, the rice is fried with different vegetables and some spices often served with papad and curd.

4. Thukpa –

Thukpa is a thick hot noodle soup influenced by both Chinese and Tibetan cuisine which also includes meat, eggs or vegetables.But, the Nepalese version is bit more spicier. Meat toppings range from yak, goat and lamb to chicken. The carefully seasoned rich meat stock gives the dish a very pleasant aroma. This warming and  comforting delicacy is popular in Kathmandu and other mountainous region.

5. Sel Roti –

Sel roti is their version of donuts. This Nepali traditional bread is made of rice flour, water, sugar and ghee. For flavours people also add banana or coconut to it. Crunchy, sweet, puffy and soft this tastes delicious and makes a wonderful snacks. It is an essential food in moat of Nepalese festival and ceremonies.

6. Gorkhali Lamb –

Gorkhali lamb is a curry dish which involves slow cooked lamb with intense flavours and potato chunks. Once cooked then the lamb is sealed and then grilled for some time. And then again transferred back to the curry. This process makes the meat tender and flavourful. It is best served with roti or rice.

7. Yomari –

Yomari is a unique dish made by the Newari community of the country. It is the steamed version of what we call “Gujiya” in India. 

8. Chatamari –

Referred to as Newari pizza by locals and tourists is a must-try delicacy.

There are a number of mouth-watering foods in the Nepalese cuisine like Dhidho, Pustakari, Pau, Sukuti, Yak cheese which are a must-try whenever you visit the country.
