Sakwar village

The Tribal Village Homestay: Sakwar, Maharashtra

Do you need to escape the crowded monsoon streets and potholes of Mumbai? Do you also need a break from your stressful and monotonous life in the commercial capital of India? Sakwar is a beautiful village during the monsoon with lush greenery and streams flowing all around the village. Are you now looking for a monsoon getaway from Mumbai, but don’t intend on going for a hike or a trek around the Western Ghats but rather are looking for something laid back where you can chill with your friends, make some new ones and most of all connect with nature?

If you are, then the Tribal village of Sakwar near the town of Virar is an ideal place to head off to for a weekend break.

Yet, an unknown village, which is located around 100 km north from the city of Mumbai, we at TLOW.in organise a weekend, one-night tribal village stay at Sakwar for ₹1500/- all inclusive with travel from Andheri railway station and back.

Sakwar village in the rains

To reach Sakwar board a fast train from Andheri railway station platform No 4 with us at 12:50 HRS to Vasai Road. The train journey takes around 50 minutes. Reach Vasai Road railway station by 13:50 HRS. Walk out of the railway station on the western side and travellers are served vegetarian Thali for lunch in a restaurant near the station.

How to Reach Sakwar

Post lunch we take rickshaws (4 in a rick) to the Vasai highway junction which is a 30-minute ride. From the highway, we will change over to a Tum-Tum and it takes another 25 minutes to reach the tribal village at 14:30 HRS.
After we reach the village we leave our bags in the homestay (five minutes walk into the village) and head off towards the water canal for a swim.

The water canal is where you can enjoy a swim in the flowing water from the monsoon rain. The canal is around 25m long, 12m wide and 5 feet deep.

Travellers who don’t intend on going for a swim can roam around the village and even explore the forest area. The forest area is a three-minute walk through the village fields where one can see buffaloes plowing the field. The forest is a dense area which is also the gateway to Takmak fort.

At around 17:00 HRS, hot Tea and biscuits will be served under a big tree overlooking a pond. After freshening up travellers are free to chill around in the homestay or do what they want.

Inside the homestay, we have various board games and speakers to play music. Some travellers bring along their musical instruments to sing and dance.

The bonfire is started outside the homestay by 20:45 HRS and Maggi noodles are cooked over the fire. The noodles cooked over the firewood give the Maggi a smokey flavour which leaves you wanting more.

Post Maggi noodles travellers can either sit around the fire and keep themselves warm or help out with the BBQ preparations for the night feast. Our BBQ is the highlight of the camp. With vegetarian and non-vegetarian (chicken) varieties consisting of five different options.

The sleeping provisions at the homestay is just a simple mat and travellers will have to carry their own blankets to keep themselves warm for the night.

Next morning, travellers are served breakfast at the homestay by 08:30 HRS which consist of egg Burjee and Poha along with chai. After breakfast, we return back to Vasai Road station the same way by using a combination of Tum-Tums and rickshaws to make it in time to board the 10:20 HRS train from Vasai road to Churchgate. Reach Andheri railway station by 11:45 HRS.

If you plan on driving down to Sakwar the trip will cost ₹1350/- and our team members will share the location of the village via WhatsApp. The village and the surrounding area has excellent mobile phone coverage and we will guide you safely to the homestay. The drive takes around two and a half hours from Mumbai.

The best time to visit Sakwar, the tribal village is during the monsoon months from mid-June to October end, since the rains bring out a different side of Sakwar with lush greenery and streams of water all around the tiny village. The only time our homestay is shut is during the summer months of April and May.

Sakwar is an extremely safe place with a zero crime rate. The village also has no threat of wild animals. The only animals that prowl the area in the night are pet dogs and cats.

A homestay in a tribe is something that everyone must try at least once in their lifetime and our team from TLOW will ensure that you have a night to remember for the rest of your life.
