Dundload bus stop

The Royal Horse Safari spot: Dundlod, Rajasthan

A 15 minute bus ride from the town of Nawalgarh and one will reach Dundlod, a prominent place of the Shekhawati region in Northern Rajasthan. Dundlod is well known for its fort and havelis all around.

The history of Dundlod dates back to the early 1700 AD when the town was handed over as a reward to Thakur Keshri Singh, the youngest son of Maharao Shardul Singh, the ruler of Jhunjhunu. Later on Sheo Singh Ji, a descendant of Thakur Keshri Singh was an admirer of art and he contributed a lot in making Dundlod a beautiful place.

Dundlod

Travellers can access the town easily from both Jaipur (147 km) and New Delhi (250 km) via train and road. There are regular buses that ply to the town of Jhunjhunu which is around 35 km from Dundlod. So the best option is to hop onto a bus from Jaipur or New Delhi to Jhunjhunu and then take a connecting bus to Dundlod.

For those who prefer to travel by train, Dundlod is also approachable by rail, the nearest railway station is Mukundgarh on the Loharu-Jaipur rail line. Loharu is directly connected to New Delhi. The local buses have better frequency and are a preferred option for most of the locals since there are just a handful of trains.

Dundlod

The Dundlod bus stop is about a kilometre away from the town and one will need to either take a shared rickshaw or walk that distance to reach the town. Walking is not a bad option since it is a straight road leading to the town.

All along the way to the town, travellers will notice plenty of schools, colleges and other educational institutes on either side of the road. Dundlod is now an educational hub and children from all over the Shekhawati region come to this town to study.

Dundlod

Once in the town, the best way of getting around town is on foot as everything worth visiting and seeing is within walking distance from each other on both the sides of the main road.

Dundlod

The main attraction is the fort which was built by Thakur Keshri Singh. The fort of Dundlod is a masterpiece of Rajput architecture. It is a grand building with beautified walls, ramparts and interiors. The main attractions are Suraj Pole, Bichla Darwaza, Diwan Khana, Duchhata and the roof top for the finest view of the town. Today, the fort is converted into a heritage hotel and maintained by the Shekhawat Rajput erstwhile rulers and one will need to pay around ₹250 to enter the fort and have a look around.

Other attractions include a few havelis (mansions) with fresco paintings rich in spiritual depiction in the town. The Goenka family of Dundlod has contributed in making some of the havelis, otherwise most of them were erected by the Shekhawat Thakurs. The Chhatri (Cenotaph) of Seth Ram Datt Goenka is also a tourist attraction. It was built in 1888 and is enriched with devotional fresco pictures inside the dome. Bhagirath Mal Goenka Haveli, Lal Chand Goenka’s Haveli and Satyanarayan Temple were built by the Goenkas.

Another attraction in Dundlod is the Horse Safari and Risala Camp organised by the Royal Family. Travellers can book the same with any travel agent in Mandawa, Nawalgarh, Jhunjhunu or come to Dundlod and book directly. The safari and camp are customised and based on the requirements of each traveller and can range from one to seven day events.

Accommodation in Dundlod is limited to a couple of backpacker style Haveli stays and the fort which has been converted into a luxury hotel. A better option for travellers is to make Mandawa their base and then travel around the region since all the important and well known Shekhawati villages and towns are within close proximity from Mandawa.

Dundlod

Dundlod is a nice laid back town which is worth visiting and one will need less than an hour to explore the entire town.
