The Pink city: Jaipur, Rajasthan

Jaipur was the first planned Indian city and it gets the name Pink city due to all its architecture being the colour pink. Jaipur can be divided into two subdivision the outer city and the inner city. The inner city is where all the main activities happened during the reign of the kings and the whole of the inner city is pink in colour, that’s how one can distinguish between the two.

Getting into Jaipur is not an issue as one can fly here or even take a train here. To travel within the city one can hire rental cars or go around in rickshaws, though beware of the rickshaw drivers as they will try and cheat new travellers. Food can be an issue here if you are a non-vegetarian as it is not freely available but if you like vegetarian food you will love Jaipur. The food is expensive as Jaipur is a full-fledged tourist attraction and lot of foreign tourists are found here.

There are a few things worth visiting in the main city of Jaipur and one of the biggest attractions here is the City Palace which is located in the heart of this city and covers a major part of this city. This palace has everything from gardens, courtyards and also consists of a museum that displays the life of the Maharaja and his family. It also comprises of the current home of the Maharaja known as Chandra Mahal. Another very popular place to visit when in Jaipur is the Jal Mahal, this Mahal can be spotted from most of the forts here in Jaipur as this palace is situated in the middle of Man sagar lake.

Other than these places a very fascinating place to visit in Jaipur is the famous Jantar Mantar, it is located right next to the City Palace and it consists of fourteen geometrical devices to measure time, find eclipses and track stars. One can hire a guide to explain these devices or just read about them on the boards put up. Around the city palace there are a number of places where one can shop for cheap souvenirs and clothes. Only tip would be to bargain before buying anything as the locals hike up the prices.

a must-see Amber fort, Jaigarh fort and Nahagarh fort. All these forts are a little on the outskirts of the main city and hiring a car is the best option to get there. Amber fort has the famous sheesh mahal that consists of thousands of mirror tiles on the walls and ceilings and are a major attraction in Jaipur.

Jaigarh fort is roughly one kilometers away from Amber fort, Jaigarh has the largest canon in the world called Jaivana and people from all over come only to see this canon. The locals say it is one of the strongest forts in the world and has never been conquered.

So if you are the kind who loves to experiment with new food items, loves forts and palaces and street shopping Jaipur is a must-visit for you. The best time to visit this city is between September to February.
