Langza is one of the highest villages in the world which is remotely situated. The village is in a bowl shape with a population of 140 people. The temperature drops to around 5 degrees during summer nights. Here are 10 things to do in the village of Langza.

1. Langza Homestay

In this tiny village, the real backpacker feel comes when you live with a family. Experience the simple lifestyle of the locals by living with them in their homes. During the first half of the year, they make handmade carpets which you can learn. During the rest of the year, you can help them grow green peas if you visit. Spend a cozy night beside the warm tandoor in the freezing climate of Langza in your homestay.

2. Fossil hunting

Believed to be a part of the Indian Ocean sometime in history, this village is known for its fossils that are thousands of years old. Within 200 metres radius from the heart of the village, you will find places filled with fossils. Challenge your friends to a game of fossil hunting. Beware that carrying back fossils is an illegal act and can lead to a heavy fine.

3. Play with the children

The children of this village are by far the friendliest in the valley. With their red cheeks and brunette hair, these children will definitely join you in your next expedition. Play a game of cricket or any new game and they are always ready to learn.

4. Eat local breakfast

The local breakfast of this village includes rotis like flatbread with butter and jam. In the cold climate hot tea with this breakfast is perfect to keep you warm and wake you up to find the wanderlust.

5. Selfie with the Buddha statue

Around 50 metres away from the village is a big vibrant golden Buddha statue which is said to be thousands of years old. Take a selfie with the Buddha and experience inner peace around the huge statue.

6. Use the eco-toilet

Langza is one of the very few villages in the country where bio compost toilets or dry toilets are still in use. Experience the dry toilets of this village and contribute to their ecosystem.

7. Learn the Spiti Language

The Spiti language is very unique and comes from the Tibetian language and is very similar to the neighbouring Ladakhi language. ‘Julley’ being the most common one meaning ‘hello’ or ‘goodbye’, learn at least 3-4 words or phrases and use it with the locals and see a smile on their face.

8. Use animal skin as your blanket

In Langza, the temperature drops well below freezing point even during summers with occasional high altitude Himalayan storms. During these hard times, locals use animal skin as their blanket to keep them warm. These blankets of skin are taken after the animal has died and the skin is dried for over six months. A night in a yak or cow skin blanket will surely give one the into the wild feel.

9. Stargaze in one of the highest villages

At an altitude of 13400 feet above sea level, this village is one of the best places to stargaze and watch shooting stars. Experience a night under the clear sky and spot hundreds of stars and constellations.

10. Taste the local alcohol

Arak, a locally brewed alcohol made out of fermented jawar is a colourless high concentrated drink which is totally worth a try and will surely give you the much-needed body warmth in the bitter cold.
