When you are travelling, a good book in hand is always a great companion when on the road. There may be many things around which draw one to look outside the window rather than peep into a book. The book you choose to read when on a journey no doubt will add to your story of travel, here are 10 must-read books to take along while travelling.

1. The Lord of the Rings

The book by JRR Tolkien has made one of the most magnificent film series with many Oscars being won. The book makes for excellent literature as well. The epic journey is the perfect saga to read while on the road. Take a deep dive into the magical world of elves, dwarfs and other creatures. The adventure is truly a beautiful one.

2. Eat, Pray, Love

The memoir which went on to be a movie starring Julia Roberts written by Elizabeth Gilbert offers a scenic description in words of Italy, India and Indonesia. The book is a perfect companion while travelling as it takes one on a trip through these three lands. The book tick marks the main things one needs while travelling – eat, pray and love – some inspiration for the journey.

3. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

The story of the last man on the planet by Douglas Adams which was chronicled in the book series takes a journey through space. As you are on your own trip to new places among strange people, the book series will be a good companion with its comedy science take on life.

4. Shantaram

The beautiful city of Bombay is brought alive in this novel by Gregory David Roberts and is a treat for all those who have lived or visited the city now called Mumbai. Based on the real-life events faced by Roberts, the book brings the underbelly of Maximum City alive in a splendid way. This one is a great companion when in a foreign land reminding one of a place which is a lot like a home or familiar for some.

The memoir of Ernesto ‘Che’ Guevara, the Marxist revolutionary follows his early adventures as he travels across South America with friend Alberto Granado, a 29-year-old biochemist. The 23-year-old medical student, Guevara and Granado travel on a motorbike as they experience self-discovery and grow to come of age to become who they eventually did. This one is an inspiration to learn from your journeys and become stronger as individuals.

6. A song of Ice and Fire

The magnum opus epic fantasy novel series by George RR Martin makes for a great read while on the road as it leads one through the mythical land of Westeros. The books made for a great TV series and also makes for a nice journey of the imagination while the body is also about new lands.

7. The Alchemist

The novel by Paulo Coelho is a great story of a journey which is a fine read while on a trip. The allegoric work is a lovely trip which takes the mind to places and gives a sense of wanderlust to the soul. While seeking that physically by travelling the mind through the novel is well in sync as well.

8. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

The classic novel by Mark Twain offers a great description of places and people painting them with such beauty that they seem like real-life people. A great book to read if, on a solo trip, these book characters will never make you feel alone. If you feel this one is too short, then you can also read the Tom Sawyer books.

Who does not love the sun, the surf and the sunny coasts, this book by Alex Garland set in Thailand is a perfect read while on a trip to the name of the novel. A book for backpacker’s based on a story about the type is a great inspiration as well as the blueprint of the perils and perks of the travel expedition.

10. Around the world in Eighty Days

The Jules Verne classic is pre the airplane and all our other fast means of communication and travel, yet it tells a tale which resonates with every travel freak. With classic adventure novel traits, this one is an apt book for a travel expedition.
