Shiroda beach sun set

The salt village of wanderlust: Shiroda, Maharashtra

Shiroda is a small village which is located around 20 km from the town of Vengurla and Sawantwadi and has the Arabian Sea to the west and the rugged Sahyadris to its east and is situated at the southernmost end of the Sindhudurg district of the Konkan region in Maharashtra.

There are multiple ways to reach Shiroda from Vengurla and Sawantwadi. The first option for travellers is to take the government MSRTC bus from the respective bus stations, this is the most economical way to travel. The second option is to hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi which is heavier on the pocket but is more economical if you are travelling in a group. The third option is to rent a scooter and do a bike trip to this laid-back village.

Once in the village, the best way to get around is on foot since everything worth seeing and visiting is walking distance from each other and walking is the best way to get a first hand feel and experience of the place by interacting with the villagers as you stroll around this laid back neighbourhood.

Shiroda

beach landscape with sparkling blue water, long stretches of silver sand and cool breeze which whispers through towering conjuring plantations on the beach and then deposits the sand all around the village gives the entire place a beach vibe.

The beach is the star attraction of the village and offers travellers unparallel natural beauty with cypress trees on one side and the sea on the other. Pre-sun rise and sunset walks at the beach are a must-do while at this tiny village.

At the same time as Mahatma Gandhi had initiated his salt march from Dandi in Gujarat to oppose the British-levied salt tax, a similar movement had been flagged off from Shiroda which has many ‘mithagaras’ where salt is produced. This was carried out under the active leadership of Acharya Dharmanand Kosambi and Achary Javadekar, Dr. Bhagwat, Achyutrao Patwardhan and Appasaheb Patwardhan were among the revolutionaries who had supported this protest. Thus the area has a place in history as well.

Accommodation in Shiroda is limited to a handful of guest houses and home stays which provide very good facilities and are not very heavy on the pocket. The backpacker guest houses are located around one km away from the beach. But it is better to make Vengurla your base and travel around the region, since the options there are much more.

The food options in Shiroda for sea-food lovers are in plenty with mouth-watering Konkani food with spicy curries made with a coconut base and variety of fish and prawns dishes served up in traditional style. The fish thali served with fresh sol kadi is a must-have while in the village.

Shiroda is the place to visit for anyone looking to escape the chaotic city life and find some much-needed wanderlust without having to break the bank. It’s a placed which has an excellent vibe and totally worth visiting over a long weekend.
