Windmills at Satara

Of windmills and water-falls: Satara, Maharashtra

While in the district of Satara in the state of Maharashtra there are two things one must see. The first is the Chalkewadi windmill farm and the other is the Thoseghar water-fall.

Both these places can be covered in a single day and the best way to get to there is by a private car because the State transport (ST buses) are not reliable to Thoseghar water-fall and the buses do not ply to Chalkewadi windmill.

It is advisable to leave early in the morning from Satara town for the water-fall since the place attracts a lot of crowd during the day and it is peak hours from 11am to 2pm. One will find it difficult to even manoeuvre to the different points to have a glimpse of the water-fall.

Waterfall in Satara

There is only one small dhaba at the entrance of the pathway to the waterfall and this dhaba serves up some really good Maharashtrian food, the missal pav served at this place is really worth a try and keep in mind that if you want to try of their delicious Maharashtrian thali you will have to place an order in advance preferably as you enter in the morning as they only cater on request.

Satara waterfalls

There is a walking path created for people to move around with ease the main water-fall which has a walking path leading to the head of the water-fall attracts a lot of crowd with most people having a dip in the water. It is advisable to be careful since the rocks are mossy and very slippery.

Windmills on the cliff top

There is also a narrow path just a few meters prior to the view point from where people can detour via a muddy path to the month of the water-fall. It takes about 5 to 7 minutes to reach the mouth of the waterfall. The view from the mouth of the water-fall is splendid and much better and also a lot more peaceful since the lack of walking path barely attracts any crowd down there.

There are also a few larger waterfalls that can be observed from a distance. The best time to visit Thoseghar water-fall is during the monsoon from July to September. As during that period the water-falls are full of life and flow with all their might.

Waterfall in the western ghats

Chalkewadi windmill farm is about a 30 minute drive from the water-fall and is a must visit. It can only be accessed by a private vehicle since no state buses ply in that direction. There is a small pond near the windmill farm. The windmills are stretched all over a 5km plateau and supply electricity to Satara and neighboring places like Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani.

This is another place that is best visited during the monsoon since the overcast conditions makes Chalkewadi windmill farm a very picturesque place, a sight to behold.

One will need at least an hour to spend in this farm. There are no provisions for food on the farm and it is advisable to keep the place clean and avoid littering. It’s advisable to carry packed food from Satara

The windmill farm and the water-fall are places that one must visit while on a weekend break in Satara.
