10 Fun facts about Hippie Island, Hampi, Karnataka

#1The “Hippie Island” is the unofficial name given to the island of Virupapur Gadde or Gaddi.

#2It gets its “Island” status as it is surrounded by the Tungabhadra River on all sides. 

#3When you visit Hampi, this is the place to stay. If you wish to find it on Google Maps, look for Virupapur Gadde and select ‘Mowgli Guest House’ on the search result.

#4The Virupaksha Temple can be seen across the river. But getting to island by road is a 40 KM drive from Hampi via Hospet. 

#5The island is almost one straight road which is lined with shacks and hotels on its sides. Pick any hotel you like as you can choose to live in anything from a mud hut to a proper room.

#6Rent a bike or take the coracle and go visit the beautiful historic city of Hampi, if you really want to go out and do something constructive. 

Hippie

#7The reason this is a unique experience is, the cafés here have a no tables and chairs policy. The mattress-on-the-floor and low-table set up is just what you need to chill out.

#8If you have been to old Manali, then the shopping scene here will create nostalgia. Buy a couple of kurtas as a memory of the trip. And it’s not just clothes – musical instruments, metal souvenirs,  rare tobacco, leather accessories,tattoo shops, etc. Anything that revolves around the idea of “Hippie” is sold here. 

#9Make sure you carry enough cash with you. There are no ATMs in both Virupapur Gadde and Hampi. You will find enough ATMs in Hospet which is about a 30 kms drive. 

#10Mobile network is rarely found on this island. Be prepared to cut yourself off from the rest of the world and just relax.
