20 Fun songs you’ll need for a road trip

The city may be great but there’s always that itch you get to pack your bags and get away from all the stress and pollution. But the idea of a silent journey gives us a flat tyre. What’s the point of a road trip where best buddies aren’t screaming along ‘Monicaaa! Oh my darling’ as you pass through hilly areas.

So we’ve compiled a list of songs to get your feet tapping along even if the engine breaks down. You can set the typical travel mood by blindly hitting play to any country track or you can crank up the 90s, it’s all in on this list with a few other options for your next travel playlist.

Road Trip Songs

Road Trip

1. Johnny Cash- I’ve been everywhere

Classics have always been everyone’s sing-along jam. This song has been a inspiration to many classic artists but what puts it on this list is its bass-baritone which indeed suggests a man who’s been everywhere.

2. The Eagles- Hotel California

This track pretty much makes it on any countdown list when it comes to suggesting great music. Great sing along and triggers nostalgia for a majority.

3. ACDC- Highway to hell

Final destination gave this song the spooky vibe that it has. But hopefully the tragedy won’t be happening outside of the movie and you’ll be rocking out along with the track.

4. Rihanna- Shut up and drive

This maybe a silly song, but is it perfect for a road trip, hell yes! The title speaks for itself.

5. Chamillionaire- Ridin’ dirty

Ever wanted to feel like a thug while rolling down the windscreen of your car in traffic? The feel and the storyline of this early hip-hop sensation will deliver exactly that.

6. Ray Charles- Hit the road, Jack

Simple R&B track with its descending piano chords and story lined lyrics. This track is featured as a road trip song in the ’89 comedy film The Dream Team.

7. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes- Home

First and foremost a love song, the L.A. troupe’s jingly-jangly 2010 smash single is also, obviously, about coming home. Naturally, the feel-good tune should be played at the end of your voyage, when you’re speeding a bit because you just can’t wait to get home.

8. Lynard Skynard- Sweet Home Alabama

I could fan boy about this track all day. The breezy country vibe that comes along with this 1974 hit is unbeatable. Talk about being in a music video, this track brings those feels to you.

9. White Snake- Here I go again

Been dumped recently? You need to go for a drive. You’ve made up your mind. You ain’t wasting no more time. So tease your hair, and crank up the volume on this 1982 hit—just try not to get stuck in traffic.

10. The Chainsmokers- Closer

This song is literally everywhere and I, for one cannot argue with the fact that this track is a perfect road jam. I can already hear the teenagers humming to the tune so just imagine how loud it’s going to get on the road with this one.

11. Arcade Fire- Keep the car running

The motive of this song is to create urgency as it assures you there is something better down the road. Keep the car running will urge you to break the speed limit every time it comes on.

The 1988 hit by Tracy Chapman will soothe your soul while propagating the idea of travelling like a free bird. What more can a road trip ask for.

This one of the tracks that makes you look out the window and pretend you’re in a music video. Sean Paul’s contribution in the song with his accentuated rhymes adds to the fun.

If there’s any song that can get your buddies to get thumping on the nearest solid surface at the same time; it’s this one. 500 miles by this Scottish duo can up your bonding game on the road.

Nothing beats the feeling of hitting the open road once in a while leaving all your stress and bills behind to take care of themselves. Ask roadster Willie Nelson who with this country hit makes you feel exactly like that.

When you think Coldplay you start to imagine bright colours in your head and the atmosphere becomes breezy all of a sudden. There couldn’t be a song more perfect to make your journey a colourful one.

20. Bruce Springsteen- Born to Run

The song is like a motorcycle rushing forward while perched on a wall of sound. “Someday girl, I don’t know when/We’re gonna get to that place where we really wanna go,” Springsteen promises. And Born to Run, for all its spikes, does take you to that place. It’s a love song, an urban-jungle cry and a perfect anthem of pedal-to-the-metal escape.
